COXEN HOLE - Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines |
||
| |
Starting in December 2008, cruise ship passengers visiting Roatan, Honduras' most famous Bay Island, will enter a waterfront cruise port village when they dock at Coxen Hole, the island's largest city. Sitting on three acres of reclaimed land, the village includes specialty restaurants, coffee shops, banks, and retail shops featuring Honduran handicrafts and chocolates. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the Municipality of Roatan and the Honduran Institute of Tourism partnered to build the new facilities. Starting early this year, 2010, the dock will be extended an additional berth to fit a total of two cruise ships at a time. This port has the urbanized feel when leaving the dock facility gates which open up to flea markets and stalls. It is very safe outside the port with many police and security officers to add a little extra reassurance. Although, you will be approached by several children - who should be in school - surrounding you so they may take you on a walking tour of the town for a small tip. It would be better to make them work for it than beg or give them a dollar to leave as this causes an additional problem. They are all good kids at heart with problems at home. Be nice and say no thank you if you do not want help, mind you they can point out good deals that you would not know about. |

THINGS TO KNOW |
||
| Not everything the cruise line tells you is for your own interest but more for their bottom line. For example, It is possible to have an excursion for half the price of what is listed on the cruise line itself. Most cruise line excursions add on an additional 100% to the original price to promote many attractions which are already open on days to normal tourist traffic to the island. They may use such tactics as Roatan is not safe and the only way they may guarantee your safety is booking through them directly. Where in fact, the island is extremely safe comparatively speaking to most other Caribbean destinations. Secondly, by booking an independent tour without going through the cruise line they have the right to leave port without you on-board---this is true although I have only heard of it ever happen once which was 6 years ago. There is no excursion the cruiseline offers that is any further than 45 minute drive away from either dock. |
